Dear Colleagues

I am pleased to attach the Economy / Market Snapshot covering all the major events in September, 2018.

September was one of the worst months for the Indian markets. It fell by 6%; Nifty went below the 11,000 mark and Sensex has come down to 36,000 levels. On the sectoral indices, Auto lost about 13%, Bank Nifty and FMCG about 10% and Pharma by 4%. IT was neutral. FII’s pulled out Rs.17,800 crores from both the equity and debt market while Indian Mutual Funds pumped in Rs.24,000 crores.

A rapid downgrade of ILFS by ICRA from AAA to D resulting in downward revision of NAV in some of the liquid / debt funds including DSP Blackrock triggered redemption pressure on DSP Blackrock. In order to meet the obligations, DSP Blackrock resorted to sell one of its portfolio paper of Diwan Housing Finance Limited at a steep discount creating a panic in the market resulting in a swing of 1000 points on a single day in Sensex. All round selling in all financial companies took place. Similarly, RBI had cut the term of the Yes Bank’s CEO, Mr Rana Kapoor resulting in Yes Bank losing about 29% in a single day and 40% last month. Sentiments turned negative in a matter of two weeks with the markets tumbling from the peak. ILFS in their Shareholders meeting has come out with a plan for infusion of funds. LIC, its largest shareholder with a stake of 25% has also pledged to support ILFS. First time, we could see the NAV of several of the liquid funds have come down eroding the principal due to the default / provisioning on account of the ILFS issue.

Globally, DOW continued its upward journey crossing the 26,000 mark with a gain of 2% last month. Japan market went up by 5% while China market went up by 4%. Indian Rupee crossed the Rs.72 mark and closed at Rs.72.44 to 1 US $. Gold gained by 1% and Silver gained about 5%. Crude went up by 7% last month with price crossing $ 80 a barrel.

With the retirement of the Chief Justice of India, we saw several important and sensitive cases were decided last month. News channels have become very busy in analyzing the pros and cons of these judgements. First signs of confrontation between India and Pakistan after Imran Khan has become the PM has surfaced with India cancelling the meeting between the Ministers of External Affairs on the sidelines of UN Council meeting. With the quarterly results coming in October coupled with the nervousness of the financial sector of the Indian market, we have to see how October is going to pan out. Elections in some of the key states will be held in December and the Parliament elections will be held in early next year if not preponed will add to the nervousness of the market. Let us hope that the festive season change the mood of the markets in October 2018.

Happy reading!…….

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to attach the Economy / Market Snapshot covering all the major events in July, 2018.

One of the best months so far for the Indian market; Market went up by 6% and is at record all time high; BSE crossed 37,000 mark and NSE crossed 11,000 mark; All the sectoral indices were positive with Bank Nifty gaining 5%, IT – 4%, FMCG – 7% and Auto 2.50%. Despite this, FII’s sold Rs.400 crores in the equity market and Rs.500 crores in the debt market. Indian Mutual funds invested Rs.5,500 crores in the equity market and Rs. 24,000 crores in the Debt market. Global markets gained last month except for Hang Seng which lost about 1%. DOW went up by 4.70% while Nasdaq went up by 2%. Indian Rupee against crossed the Rs.69 mark but settled at Rs.68.54 to 1 US $. Gold and Silver lost about 2% while Crude lost about 7%.

Despite the Trade war between China and US, markets are going up non-stop. Though not much of interest shown by FII’s which is reflected in the INR-USD position as well, Indian mutual funds are supporting the market with a number of SIP schemes. There is some nervousness in the market with many of the investors holding to cash and not taking fresh positons. With the elections in India in the next 6 to 8 months, how long the market will go up is the big question in everyone’s mind. Most of the quarterly results were very good which held the market. Let us see how August will pan out …….

Indian Mutual funds invested Rs.6,500 crores in the equity market which helped the market to some extent. The trend is almost the same for the last two months. On the sectoral front, Pharma gained 12%, IT by 2% and FMCG by 0.50% while Bank Nifty lost 2% and Auto by 3%.On the Global front, Shanghai lost about 8 % thanks to the trade war between China and US. Hong Kong also fell by 5%. Nasdaq went up by 1% while Dow went down by 0.50%. London was down by 0.50%. Indian Rupee touched the Rs.69 mark but settled at Rs.68.49 to 1 US $. Government has said that RBI has enough reserves to prevent further slide. Gold went down by 1% while Silver went down by 2%. Crude prices went up by 2% and currently at $ 79 a barrel.

The much awaited Summit of North Korea and US took place in Singapore. While this gave a positive feeling, the trade war between US and China is becoming a major issue. Measures and Counter measures by both US and China have made the markets nervous with the Chinese stock market going down by 8%. Bitcoin plunged below $ 6000 creating a panic amongst the investors. On the Indian business front, ICICI Board finally took a decision to ask Ms Chanda Kochhar to go on leave till investigations are complete, Vijay Mallya releasing a statement regarding his actions to settle the bank loans and the arrest of the CEO of Bank of Maharashtra took the headlines. Monsoon has set in and Quarterly results will start flowing in the next few weeks which will guide the direction of the market.

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to attach the Economy / Market Snapshot covering all the major events in May, 2018.

Indian markets ended almost flat last month. Market corrected down initially but recovered towards the end of the month. FII’s sold Rs.7,600 crores in the equity market and Rs.17,500 crores in the debt market. Indian Mutual funds invested Rs.13,700 crores in the equity market which helped the market not to fall. On the sectoral front, Pharma lost 9%, Auto by 5%, IT by 2% while Bank Nifty went up by 5.50%. On the Global front, Dow went up by 1%, Nasdaq went up by 5% and London market went up by 2%. Tokyo and Hong Kong went down by 1% while Shanghai remained flat. Indian Rupee crossed the Rs.68 mark but settled at Rs.67.41 to 1 US $. Gold went down by 0.50% while Silver went up by 3%. Crude prices shot up and currently at $ 78 a barrel.

Except for the public sector banks, Quarterly / Annual results of Companies were generally good. Karnataka Elections gave a hung verdict but with the quick move of Congress and JD to form an alliance, Kumaraswamy has become the Chief Minister but still struggling on the cabinet formation with pulls and pressures. On the other important event for June regarding the meeting between the Presidents of US and North Korea, we have still keep our fingers crossed and see whether the meeting can still take place on 12th June 2018 or get postponed to another date. Holiday and Summer season is coming to an end and hope June will be a busy month for all.

Dear Colleagues

I am pleased to attach the Economy / Market Snapshot covering all the major events in March, 2018.

Financial Year 2017-2018 has come to an end and the new Financial Year 2018-2019 has begun ! Some of the new budget proposals like Long Term Capital Gain will come into force from today. Market was closed for the last 4 days due to holidays. Indian markets came down by 3.50% last month; Nifty even came down below 10,000 mark briefly before bouncing back. All the sectors came down with Pharma losing as high as 7%. FII’s bought about Rs.13,400 crores in the equity market and the Domestic funds had pumped in Rs.5,000 crores. Indian Rupee closed at Rs.65.17 against 1 US Dollar. Global markets fell in the range of 2% to 3% without any exception.

Trade war between US and China commenced with import tariffs and restriction by both the sides. Good news is the meeting between the North Korean and Chinese Presidents giving a major relief. While BJP could win in some of the States when went on Poll, it lost the by-polls in UP and Bihar giving a shock to its leadership. Sonia’s effort to bring all the opposition parties together with Mamata Banerjee and Chandrasekara Rao seeking the unity of the Opposition will gather strength in the coming months. One more ally fell out of BJP with the Telugu Desam moving out due to non-granting of special status to Andhra Pradesh. The next battle is the Karnataka election which is scheduled to take place in beginning of May. On the business front, ICICI Bank’s Chanda Kochar was on the headlines with CBI registering a Preliminary Enquiry on the complaint that there was a quid pro quo in the lending to Videocon Group Companies.

Gold and Silver were almost neutral while Crude went up by 7% coming closer to the $ 70 mark. Annual / Quarterly results will start in the next few weeks setting a direction for the new financial year.  Many articles about another recession in the US and a free fall of markets are going round. However the fundamentals of India are sound and hopefully we should not see a huge correction. Of course, we will have the elections next year and there are talks that these may even be preponed. We can see some volatility in the coming months. Let us hope that we have a good financial year 2018-2019!

Happy Financial Year and Happy reading!
